Great to meet you! I’m Dorcas and I’m loving this new passion I’ve discovered. But it took me years to get here. At 52, I’m truly excited to be creative in a way which is resourceful, beautiful and unique.

As a teen, I had four dreams for my life, to be a dentist, lawyer, artist and mother. But with the first three dreams, I was told “I couldn’t” or “I shouldn’t” - I listened to the naysayers and lost myself in the cloud of their opinions.

My fourth dream was to become a mother - I had no plans to compromise that dream. That role will always be my first love. My two daughters are incredible young women, and I’m thankful for them. Yet I am multi-dimensional and I have need for creative expression and adventure.

Much of that expression had been focused on painting landscapes, decorating my home and coloring mandalas. During one project I decided to use mosaic tiles to upgrade a plain white mirror. It was such a cool experience, I wanted to do it again. While internet scrolling I was inspired by a pin I saw - it was a mosaic of a darker skinned lady. I had that light bulb moment and I immediately knew that this was fuel for my creative fire - Melanin Mosaics was born. 

Even with the best laid plans, roadmap and a compass, life is an unpredictable journey - and I’ve come full circle to pursue a dream that I thought was lost. It’s never too late to embrace your dreams and rediscover who you are and what brings you joy.

I currently live in Washtenaw County in Michigan and my daughters are pursuing careers in politics and medicine. I couldn’t be happier.
